Chip carving is another way to decorate or personalize a wooden item in the folk art tradition. It involves skillfully using two hand tools, a chip carving knife and a stab knife, to make v shaped cuts that become geometrical patterns, floral or leafy designs, borders or lettering. This style of carving is very old and was employed extensively in Europe to decorate items like shelves, boxes, chests, buckets, and various furniture. Jim once studied under Wayne Barton, and has utilized chip carving as an innovative way to embellish many of his carvings and projects.
If you would like to add another style of carving to your folk art, please check out this one day class to get the nuts and bolts of using chip carving techniques. Participants will learn to sharpen their chip carving knives, layout a simple design, and learn how to use chip carving as a way to enhance your folk art.
